I am just wondering how I can update this software which has come with my computer (Sony-Vaio) and whether I am able to update it without messing it up (for instance it would not work anymore because it came as it is and there are no updates)?

You have the possibility to update the software but it will cost you money since the OEM applications can't be updated if the update is paid. However, if you have a valid CD key for the application, you can download an updated version from the official website. The manufacturer of your laptop will never support products bundled with their devices.
To fix this error, make sure that your webcam is properly installed and there are no background applications that may use the camera's features (streaming, audio, etc). Open Task Manager and go to Processes. Close all the known programs that have the possibility to work with camera devices. Once these applications are close, you can use the camera in its normal state.
